Grow Island

PatrickOn of Eyezmaze is back! The man behind the Grow series, one of the most beloved staples of free play on the Web since the invention of Flash, has just come out with a new game, Grow Island. The game takes the 'pick objects in order and watch the world grow' dynamic of his previous Grow titles and applies it to a university curriculum. Instead of picking a ball, or a treasure, as your selection of items, you pick Civil Engineering, Applied Chemistry, Architecture, and in the process of prioritizing these fields of knowledge endeavor to create a perfect utopia.

This is without a doubt On's greatest work-to-date, and in it he embodies an optimistic philosophy. Following the correct order of things will lead to a society where men and women get along happily, the environment is protected and technology is harnessed to discover the secrets of the universe. In order to get there though, you have to try and fail to find that correct order, witnessing petty tragedies of rejection, deforestation, volcanic disaster and broken beakers. Success means uncovering an increasingly delightful series of animations and evolutions, like peeling back layers from an onion, if the onion had an everlasting gobstopper at its core. There's even a wink to Japan's love of humanoid-robot-samurai action—it's glorious.

Analysis: The gameplay of the Grow series is basically about deductive puzzle-solving games , the rewards come in unearthing the underlying logic behind the correct sequence and in the animated flowering that accompanies this process. Grow Island streamlines this gameplay by adding descriptive hints to the names of the objects, its alluded to that Chemistry will lead to fuel cells, and that mechanical engineering enables the construction of civil structures. Grow RPG was the first move in this direction, where your sense of RPG logic (if you're such a hardcore fan) guided you through. Island brings this sort of allusive logic to the realm of general human knowledge, and it is perhaps a happy coincidence that On, being commissioned by a University, would lead to a refinement of this design pattern. Sometimes, however, it backfires, or maybe just reinforces a casual, rather than synchronistic, interpretation; for example you might think that Chemistry would be necessary to spur chemistry between the man and woman, a synchronic, poetic way of thinking about it, it turns out this isn't the case.

Overall, this game is nearly perfect, a love letter to the Internet-faring human race, a paper crane with poetry written all over its folded insides.

Monster Master

Your goal in this addictive RPG card game is to defeat your opponent. At the start of a match you will be dealt five cards from your deck to your hand, and one more at the beginning of each turn. You will not be able to see your opponents cards. Monsters must be summoned before they can attack. To do this, use YOUR MOUSE to drag the monster from your hand to the monster area. You may only begin to summon one monster each turn. To attack with a monster, drag it onto an enemy monster. This will bring up a battle screen. There are also magic cards that will help you in your battle. I strongly recommend you to read in-game instructions to learn everything about cards and gameplay. Good luck!

Purchase and place the defenders (archers, mages, ninjas, and more) strategically along the map, and destroy the invaders. Place your defenders by clicking on a selectable tile once, then move the mouse around it to choose the direction it will face to attack (the attack range is white). Defenders will gain experience by attacking and killing invaders. Use YOUR MOUSE to control the game. To navigate the map, hold down the SPACEBAR and LEFT MOUSE BUTTON, then drag the mouse around. Good luck!

Swords and Sandals

Swords and Sandals is an adventure game where you must level up your arena gladiator in order to compete for money, fame, and power. By increasing stats and buying new equipment you’ll gain the edge it takes to be victorious in battle. However, battles are still determined by a large amount of randomness, and with no save or continue features this can be large annoyance.

In Swords and Sandals you start off by creating your character. Since a majority of your character’s appearance is governed by the armor you buy and how you upgrade your strength stat, there’s not a whole lot of customization to do. Body color, hair color, hair style, and facial hair style sum it up. Luckily there are a lot of hair styles to choose from, and you can color your warrior anything from brown to blue to red- so there are still a lot of diverse character options. You will then proceed to distribute your character stats. Use the tooltip feature and mouse-over the stats to find out what they all do, as this can be important for entering into your first battles. From here you’re free to start buying armor and weapons, and duke it out in your first battle.

There are a large variety of weapons and armor to choose from, unfortunately though, you’ll probably never get to use most of it. The items are all locked by level, so even if you had the cash you couldn’t start out with high level stuff. All the armor you buy appears on your character and there are quite a few areas to upgrade, including helmet, gauntlets, greaves, breastplate, boots, shield, and more. The weapons themselves come in three categories- slashing, hacking, and bashing. They affect range and stamina (heavier weapons tire you quicker) but all have the same ranges of attack damage.

Now, for the battle system- it is turn based and I like how it’s set up, but I still think it is determined too much by random numbers. In battle you will start across the arena from your opponent. From here you can advance towards your opponent by jumping or advancing, or choose to taunt. When you are close to your opponent you can lunge in, and then start close ranged battle. From here you can use light/heavy/medium attacks, as well as shove your foe away. Everything else here is determined by the numbers. Harder attacks are more likely to be blocked, and the amount of damage done is a result of the two fighter’s strength and defense stats. For the most part things work, but I’ve been caught twice by my opponent getting a critical attack and slicing my head off in the first couple moves. The first two gladiators you fight are relatively easy (critical hits aside) but after that you’re already up against the first arena boss, who has an estimated 90% chance of killing you every time. And this is what’s disheartening about the game- once you are defeated, it’s over. No continuing, saving, trying again, or anything. You gotta remake your character and start again. I had to play about seven times before I bested the first arena boss, and then I just died from the guy that follows him. The lack of any kind of continuing option severely hurts this game in my opinion. It’s like getting killed by a boss in an rpg then having to restart the whole game.

Graphics aren’t over the top but they cover everything you need, from the town square to the gladiator arena. Warriors look nice even with the large amount of changeable parts that each is composed of. Animations are a bit stiff, but you’re somewhat limited when you have to work with a character model like this one. I like the music tracks and overall ambience of the game. The ‘swords and sandals’ opening theme is a nice touch, as well as the ‘gladiator, gladiator’ level-up track.

Swords and Sandals has a lot going for it, and if you can level your character properly there’s a lot of gameplay here too. Many items and weapons to unlock, and seven arena bosses to take on. Get ready for some frustration though if luck isn’t going your way. Please, just give us the save feature next time, and this game will be golden.

Super Smash Flash

I will start by saying this much- the actual time and effort spent in making this game is absolutely sick. This is a near feature-perfect replication of Smash Brothers Melee on the gamecube. It’s got the characters, the items, the stages, the modes, just about anything you could think of. Except the gameplay.

This game deserves so much credit for the amount of stuff packed into it. It’s got a one player mode, complete with classic mode, adventure mode (and eventually all-star), target tests, and training mode. If that’s not enough you can go into versus mode and fight your friend under any number of conditions like stock, time, item selection, and custom damage ratio. While playing the game will track fight bonuses and stats. The character roster includes a full 28 characters, with 13 available from the start. Each character is complete with their own move set, sprites, and sound effects.
The graphics and sound are nice, but I can’t rate them too highly simply because almost nothing here is original. I don’t doubt that ripping them all and creating the custom stages took time, but every sprite you see is something that was taken from an existing sprite sheet, some original and some custom. Same with the sound, just about everything here can be found in the melee sound test- except of course for the sounds of the characters that didn’t exist in melee. The announcer voice provided by Kagome is a nice touch though. The custom graphics for the menus are slick and do a good job of mimicking the melee menus. However the drawings/animations that have been added on to the characters to represent their special moves are usually quite bad. But I can excuse it for a one-man game of this size, as it really doesn’t affect the gameplay.

Speaking of gameplay, that’s where the game falls terribly short. The controls are simple enough- move jump and attack. However the physics, movement, and AI programming hardly even work. I decided to take captain falcon through classic mode, as he’s my favorite character from melee. My first match was against Sonic. The first thing I realized is that the vertical left and right movement is pretty broken- when moving back and forth the character will have about a 10-20 pixel gap in between stances. Sonic just started running around and trying to attack me, but never really did any damage. I walked around a little bit and he just jumped off the screen. As I went through the stages the AI seemed pretty hit-and-miss. Sometimes it would come after me and knock me off, sometimes it would just stand there and start doing the same move over and over. All that I really ever had to do to win a match though, was just walk toward the cpu and start mashing the attack button. My opponent would usually fly off the screen in a couple hits. I thought this was maybe because I was playing on easy mode, but the same thing often happened to me. For some reason one single hit would send me to my death. The mini games like target test and race to the finish were good ideas, but the game’s floaty physics make them more of a chore than something fun. Sometimes matches would end almost as soon as they started, with cpu opponents apparently killing themselves or something. I’m not exactly sure. I tried the game with a few different characters and the results were pretty much the same for all.

If Cleod had spent a fraction of the time used to make this game on building a better engine, as opposed to cramming in as much stuff as possible, this game could have been awesome. It’s like someone put a piece of tracing paper on top of Smash Brothers Melee, traced every last detail they could, but did it with a broken pencil. As it stands though, Super Smash Flash is simply a buggy and flawed attempt at recreating one of the best fighting games of all time. Not that it’s fair to compare though, considering flash and consoles can’t even be held on the same level for production values (well, usually). Like I said, if this flash only had a few characters and stages, but was actually fun to play, it could have been incredible. I know you’ve got the skills Cleod, focus them next time.

13 Days in Hell

Publisher: QiGames

At first glance, 13 days in hell appears to be quite impressive. The game has a neat occult feel to it, the menus have a 3d book as a back drop, and the game starts by having you sign the ’13 days challenge pact’. Sadly, after a few rounds, the game play starts to get highly repetitive, and what you are left with is a highly-polished, but highly mediocre game.

At its heart, 13 days in hell is a point and click shooting game. It features five guns, three hand guns, a shot gun and a machine gun. There are three difficulty levels, with hard levels having significantly more enemies. While the later guns are more powerful, they all feel a little vanilla – fire rate, reloading and accuracy are the only things that change between them. The game has a few different enemies, which again are all pretty similar. A couple need to be hit in their ‘weak points’ to be dealt with effectively, but besides that they are pretty much the same. The damage system is good – basing the damage dealt on the type of enemy, the distance they were shot, where they were shot and the weapon used. The system rewards accuracy, and makes the game a lot more skill dependant than it would be otherwise. The game has far less enemy types than levels, meaning that a new guy is introduced only every few rounds. At the end of the level, points are awarded based on life left and accuracy. Ammunition can then be bought.

The graphics in the game are decent, but with only a few pre-rendered models and no real level scenery there just isn’t a whole lot to look at. The music and sound effects are also pretty good, but again there pretty basic. Periodically, enemies will walk through each other. While there are a couple bugs with the menus and with starting a new game, there not enough to really affect game play.

While it might not be the best game out there, I would still recommend checking it out if you are a fan of the genre or just looking to kill some time. Since easy mode is really easy, you might want to skip straight to medium or hard.

Apple Shooter

There’s really no way you can not enjoy this flash game, Apple Shooter. If you win and go to the next level, there’s a sort of competitive angle, but if you lose, well, then, you really win. Isaac Newton would be so proud.
